An overview is given of bacterially catalyzed oxidation and reduction reactions of metals. Bacteria of the genera Thiobacillus and Sulfolobus have a chemolithotrophic mode of metabolism and catalyze various metal transformations. The microbial oxidation of metal sulfides, ferrous iron and the consequences of these reactions are discussed. The microbial reductions of molybdate, chromate and ferric iron are also considered. The role played in the recovery of metals and in the transport of toxic metals is discussed.
