Mental development and dynamics of psychoneurologic processes in children from an environment exposed to contamination with heavy metals

In the years 1982-1985 psychological examination were carried out of 331 children aged 1 to 13 years living in Miasteczko Slaskie close to a zinc plant contaminating the environment with heavy metals. The control group comprised 51 children aged 6 to 13 years in the Sonsnicowice community with a relatively low dust pollution of atmosphere and toxic contamination. The study included the use of the Short Intelligence Scale, Bender-Koppitz test, Brunet-Lezine scale. Interviews were conducted with parents and teachers. The obtained results demonstrated a normal mental development of children in both groups and a small proportion of cases with disturbances of the psychoneurological processes.
