Both the Norplant six capsule system and Norplant-2 rod system are subdermal contraceptive implants containing levonorgestrel only. The results of this comparative study show that the effects of both systems on haemostatic function are essentially similar. The acceptors have a possibly increased predisposition to thrombosis as evidenced by significant increase in platelet count and aggregability. Furthermore, the shortened prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time together with changes in vitamin K factors indicate the possible enhanced potential for hypercoagulation.
