Comparative cytologic evaluation of device smears in women using CuT 200 devices & Lippes loop

Cytological evaluation of endometrial tissue adhering to IUD at the time of their removal was carried out in 93 CuT200 users and 42 Lippes loop wearers to compare the degree of inflammatory and pathological changes induced by these 2 types of IUD. The incidence of endometrial hyperplasia was higher with copper IUD (10.7%) than with inert ones (7.1%). The hyperplastic changes also occurred earlier with CuT (5 yr) than with Lippes loop (8 yr). Inflammatory changes in the endometrium were also higher with CuT (76.3%) than with Lippes loop (45.2%). Copper IUD should not be worn uninterruptedly for > 5 yr and Lippes loops for > 7.8 yr.
