Comparative study of incidence of diarrhea among children in two different environmental situations in Calcutta

Children up to 5 years old and living in a slum in Calcutta, India, or in high-rise blocks with good sanitary facilities were studied for 10 months. Episodes of diarrhoea per child in the slum and high-rise blocks were 1.6 and 1.4, indicating no significant difference. Education level of mothers and health knowledge of parents influenced the incidence of diarrhoea. Malnourished children had more episodes of diarrhoea, as were partially breast-fed children compared to the fully breast-fed.
