Aspects of dairy cattle husbandry are discussed including automation, milking centre design, behaviour, management, social environment, cow and calf handling, influence of transport on heart-rate, human-animal interactions, and husbandry procedures. It is concluded that automation should provide time for animal observation, and that a knowledge of normal behavioural patterns can improve management and handling.
