A 10-day-old Charolais cross suckled calf with a 4-day history of diarrhoea and progressive pelvic limb paresis was dull, depressed, in poor bodily condition, diarrhoeic, dehydrated; thoracic limb function was normal but patellar, withdrawal and proprioceptive reflexes were absent in the pelvic limbs. Polyarthritis affecting joints of both pelvic limbs was present. An infective lumbar spinal lesion betwen L3 and S2 associated with a previous septicaemia was diagnosed provisionally and symptomatic treatment initiated. The calf's condition deteriorated, meningitis was diagnosed and the calf destroyed on humane grounds. PM examination revealed lesions suggestive of enteritis and arthritis in affected joints. No significant pathological changes were seen in the vertebral column, spinal cord and heart but a well formed irregularly laminated fibrin thrombus was found at the iliac bifurcation. The origin of the thrombus was not determined. This condition should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pelvic limb paresis; assessment of arterial pulse should assist in the diagnosis.
