Establishment of serum lipid reference values in school-age children in Subotica

The aim of the study was to establish the levels of specific lipid parameters in schoolchildren from Subotica. The study comprised 393 pupils aged from 7 to 14 years in whom the levels of the centile for total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides were determined. Levels of the total cholesterol P75 were 4.8 mmol/l in boys and 4.85 mmol/l in girls. High risk levels of P95 were 5.55 mmol/l in boys and 5.00 mmol/l in girls. Levels of LDL cholesterol P75 were 2.91 mmol/l in boys and 2.84 mmol/l in girls. High risk levels of P95 were 3.65 mmol/l in boys and 3.60 mmol/l in girls. A level of HDL cholesterol below P10 may be considered as dangerous for boys below 1.00 mmol/l and for girls below 1.11 mmol/l. The authors are of the opinion that the results of the study will contribute to the establishment of serum lipid reference values in schoolchildren in this territory.
