Experimental viral-induced congenital encephalopathies. I. Pathology of hydranencephaly and porencephaly caused by bluetongue vaccine virus

Bluetongue vaccine virus was injected directly into 30 foetal lambs at different stages of gestation. Lambs were killed at intervals varying from 6 to 100 days after inoculation. The type of malformation depended upon the stage of development when the foetus was infected. Lambs infected at 50 to 58 days of gestation developed a severe necrotizing encephalopathy which, at 150 days of gestation (the time of birth) presented as hydranencephaly. Lambs infected at 75 to 78 days of gestation developed a multifocal encephalitis and vacuolation of white matter which appeared as porencephalic cysts in the newborn. Infection after 100 days of gestation resulted in a mild focal encephalitis with no pathologic sequelae except glial nodules.
