In a study to determine the prevalence of Taenia solium infection in Mexico, 66 754 serum samples collected from all 32 states were examined. The overall prevalence, using a >=1:80 titre haemagglutination test, was 1.2%. Despite some people being at significantly greater risk (residents of central and southeastern areas of Mexico, rural inhabitants, children, the elderly, women), the differences were small and all groups are considered to be at risk of infection. Control programmes aimed at the whole population are discussed.
