Using a Galton-Watson process, it was shown that the approximation 1 - u = (2s/ sigma 2) + o(s), where u = the extinction probability of the mutant, s = the selection coefficient and o(s) is progeny number of a parent, is mathematically invalid. However, the approximation was shown to be valid for a set of families of progeny distributions, and, even though mathematically incorrect, may be accepted for most biological situations.
