According to a position paper from The American Dietetic Association, pregnant adolescents are nutritionally at risk and require intervention early and throughout .. pregnancy". However, recent data on nutrient intakes of pregnant adolescents are limited to several studies, each conducted within a specific region and most with relatively small sample sizes. Because these studies identified dietary inadequacies, additional data that describe pregnant adolescents' dietary patterns and nutrient intakes would be timely. The objective of this study was to investigate the food-related behavior of a sample of pregnant adolescents living in southern Appalachia, a region with high rates of adolescent pregnancy and infant mortality and low educational levels and incomes. The study was limited to white adolescents because growth patterns differ among racial groups and because blacks represent less than 10% of the region's population.
