95 women were investigated for factors influencing the length of breast feeding. All women were breast feeding their infants on discharge from hospital, and 2 months later 64% were still fully breast feeding. There were no differences between those who had stopped breast feeding before 2 months post partum and those who were continuing in relation to socioeconomic, prenatal and neonatal factors, but the incidence of Caesarean sections was significantly higher in the women who had stopped. Women who delivered by Caesarean section did not differ from those with vaginal delivery in any other way. Reasons for discontinuing breast feeding were similar in both groups, the main reasons being insufficient milk and maternal discomfort.
