The effect of long-term therapy with a calcium antagonist on thrombocyte function in hypertension patients

The effect of nifedipine therapy on calcium-dependent platelet aggregation responses were studied in 36 patients with essential hypertension. Platelet aggregation was studied, using a new laser analyzer. It was found that long-term nifedipine therapy results in different changes in ADP-induced platelet aggregation. These changes depend on the levels of aggregation responses which were determined prior to the beginning of the treatment. The hypotensive response of the patients does not depend either on the degree of left ventricular hypertrophy or on variants of aggregation responses identified earlier. The hypotensive response is determined only by the initial levels of platelet aggregation.
