Incidence rates of spontaneous abortion, premature birth, stillbirth and congenital defects in 2821 women with Toxoplasma gondii from Jinan, China, were 0.67%, 3.47%, 0.85% and 0.96% respectively. These 4 rates in the group serologically diagnosed as recently or actively infected were significantly higher than in those with no evidence of infection and the relative risk estimates were 7.38, 3.52, 8.68 and 9.44 respectively. Congenital defects were statistically correlated with infections in the first trimester of gestation.
