200 lactating patients were divided into 4 groups and given either (i) a single dose of 5 mg oestradiol benzoate + 8 mg oestradiol valerianate + 20 mg nortestosterone acetate + 180 mg testosterone enanthate; (ii) as (i) but repeated 24 h later; (iii) 100 mg testosterone enanthate + 10 mg oestradiol valerianate; or (iv) 80 Mg mestranol orally every 6-12 h, for an average of 4.8 days. Complete inhibition of lactation occurred in a total of only 11.5% of cases; there was slight lacteal secretion for an average of 5 days and breast congestion in some for up to 61/2 days. Best results were obtained for mothers who had given birth prematurely and for multiple births, or when medication was started immediately post partum. Good inhibition of lactation was obtained for (iv), but there was breast congestion and bleeding. Overall, (i) gave the best results, especially for mothers of full-term babies.
