This paper provides a detailed summary of the 'Soper Lecture' given by the author on the past, present and future helminth control programmes undertaken by various international organizations. The paper discusses the various objectives and results with special reference to the onchocerciasis control programme, the dracunculiasis programme and the expanded programme of chemotherapy to reduce the impact of schistosomiasis and intestinal helminths in schoolchildren in Ghana. This paper was given as the 13th Soper Lecture at the 40th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in Boston, USA, on 5 December 1991. It concentrates on the Onchocerciasis Control Programme, the Dracunculiasis Eradication Programme, and a project to provide mass chemotherapy and hygiene education to control schistosomiasis and several intestinal helminths among schoolchildren nationwide in Ghana.Carolyn A.
