Initiation of athletic training at an early age raises several concerns regarding adolescent growth and development. Hormonal aberrations in reproductive function characterized by secondary amenorrhea are reported in female athletes, particularly those who initiate training before menarche. Secondary amenorrhea, in turn, is associated with reduced bone mineral density. Interpretation of the cause of amenorrhea in athletic women is still the subject of investigation because of the many variables associated with menstruation, eg, exercise training and energy intake. The purpose of this study was to assess the dietary and training status of amenorrheic and eumenorrheic adolescent runners.
