A 13-year-old female cat presented with intermittent vomition over the previous 4 months was found to be feline leukemia negative, but feline immunodeficiency virus positive. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a total obstruction of the bile duct with dilation, convolution and thickening of the bile duct proximal to the obstruction. The gallstones, resembling coarse grit, were removed and, on analysis, were found to be calcium carbonate, with no trace of either cholesterol or bile pigment. The cat made an uneventful recovery. The cat's diet consisted of commercial canned food. No change was made to the diet postoperatively as a recurrence was considered unlikely.
