Professor Vilmos Tauffer (1851-1934) established in Hungary a system of data collection relating to every birth and every birth-related event. In this he was 50 years ahead of his time. The International Gynecological Society (FIGO) and the International Fertility Research Program (IFRP) put together a computer program in 1976 for unified obstetrical data collection which is being used in more than 100 clinics in the developed and developing countries. This research summarizes the major indicators from 35,000 births in 4 Central and South American clinics, 3 European clinics, 2 African clinics, and 3 Asian clinics (12 in all) between January 1977, and January 1978, as well as 11,056 births taking place over a 3-year period in the Debrecen Obstetrical Clinic; it provides information on reproductive capacity, perinatal mortality, certain factors affecting fetal development and perinatal mortality, as well as certain characteristics of family planning.
