Reviews the progress that has been made since the October 1979 meeting, Infant and Young Child Feeding, which was sponsored by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. The meeting produced agreements in 5 broad areas relating to improving infant feeding practices; the most controversial 1 centered on the need for governmental control over commercial marketing and promotion of infant formula and other breastmilk substitutes. The code that developed out of the meeting has proven difficult to enforce, but its real significance may be in terms of educating and organizing health care professionals to withstand the promotional efforts of the infant food industry.
