Some observations on perinatal mortality

Study of 2500 consecutive deliveries revealed perinatal mortality rate 82.4/1000 births, stillbirth rate 48/1000 births and neonatal death rate 36.1/1000 live births. Perinatal loss was significantly higher in twin deliveries, mothers with bad obstetric history, in abnormal presentation and in extremes of maternal ages and parity. Perinatal mortality was increased with decreasing birth weight and gestational age. Asphyxia (32.5%), infections (11%), maternal diseases (8.7%) and congenital anomalies (8.7%) were the major causes of perinatal deaths. Autopsy revealed anoxia (48%) and pulmonary lesions (28%) as the common causes of death.
