Chronic diarrhoea due to strongyloidiasis in a Nigerian with chronic renal failure: a case report

The case is reported of a 58-year-old Nigerian man with chronic diarrhoea due to infection with Strongyloides stercoralis. His problem was compounded by chronic renal failure due to glomerulonephritis. At that time, stool examination revealed no evidence of pathogenic organisms. Haemodialysis resulted in clinical and biochemical improvement. Three months later he was readmitted to hospital, his diarrhoea having continued up to that time. A diagnosis of strongyloidiasis was made and he was successfully treated with thiabendazole (1.5 g BD for 3 days).
