The effectiveness and side effects of Encare Oval, a vaginal contraceptive containing the spermicide Nonoxynol-9, were investigated in 50 fertile women ages 18-40 years. Patients were interviewed at admission to the study and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. They were instructed to use a suppository with every act of intercourse, to insert the suppository as high into the vagina as possible, and to allow 10-20 minutes to elapse before intercourse. 10% of patients complained of vaginal burning, 2% experienced coital discomfort, 4% had vaginal discharge, and 4% reported penile irritation in their partners. Only 2 subjects dropped out of the study as a result of these side effects. No pregnancies occured, and there were no alterations in the Pap smears or cultures. The effectiveness of the method noted in this study is attributed to the subjects' high motivation to use the suppositories correctly.
