Traditional and contemporary approaches to the diagnosis of malaria are reviewed. The methods considered include standard microscopy, the quantitative buffy coat (QBC) system, antibody detection by immunofluorescence or ELISA, antigen detection by radioimmunoassay or ELISA, and the use of DNA and RNA probes. The suitability of each of these techniques for use in the field is discussed.
