Assessment of body composition in children is reviewed with an emphasis on the need for improved methods of estimating muscle, bone and fat in children in order to describe better the influence of exercise on body composition. The studies reviewed showed only small changes in body composition in prepubescent children who participated in short-term training programmes. The development of improved body composition methods, and long-term training studies and follow-up, are essential for the prevention of diseases related to improper development of both the musculoskeletal system and body fat content.
