Of 61 sedentary Swiss men 38 +or- 9 years old and 33 women 40 +or- 9 years old, 39 and 17, respectively, jogged for 2 h a week for 4 months. After 4 months, in men high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in serum had increased by 0.12 mmol/litre and very-low-density cholesterol had decreased by 0.26 mmol/litre. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and total triglycerides did not change significantly. Much of the effect of jogging on HDL cholesterol was apparently mediated through a decrease in body fat. Changes in women were similar but less pronounced.
