The case is reported of a 29-year-old French woman who presented with a cystic swelling in the neck. Fine needle aspiration revealed clear fluid containing calcareous corpuscles and numerous hooklets. Positive indirect haemagglutination (1:160) confirmed the cytological diagnosis of hydatid disease. The possible sources of infection were previous brief trips to Tunisia, Lebanon and the Balearic Islands. The cyst was removed surgically without complications.
