Temperature and feeding in dogs. I. Effects of heating and cooling of the vertebral canal upon meal size

A polyethylene tube was implanted in the vertebral canal of 2 dogs. When food intake was stable the vertebral canal was heated or cooled by the introduction of water from a controlled temperature bath into the tube. There was a significant and invariant decrease in food intake as a function of increase in temperature above 40 degrees C but there was no significant change in food intake with temperatures from 14.5o to 20.0 degrees .
