An attempt has been made in this paper to ascertain the direct and indirect effects of demographic and socioeconomic factors on fertility using path diagrams with areal data. Those variables were selected on the basis of substantive theories of factors proximately influencing fertility and from other empirical studies. The major findings were as follows. 1) With regard to the direct effects on fertility, the mortality (ages 5-19) appears to be the most significant factor among those considered in determining the fertility level in 1975 for both urban and rural areas. 2) With regard to those variables directly affecting nuptiality, density of population for the urban areas as well as the whole country appears to be important. But in rural areas, women's schooling (ages 30-39) has the greatest effect on nupitality (ages 15-19). 3) As to the factors influencing mortality, density of the population for the whole country, the T.V. ratio for urban areas, and women's schooling (ages 30-39) for rural areas appear to be the most important factors. 4) Finally, for those factors affecting the weighted cumulative acceptance rate/1000 married women, density of population, mortality (ages 5-19), and doctor and pharmacist ratio/10,000 persons appear to be important factors for the country as a whole.
