From October 1976 to October 1977, in 7 rural coastal villages in the Philippines, 769 episodes of diarrhoea in children under 6 years old were treated, by a trained local resident, with an oral rehydration solution (ORS) of electrolytes and glucose and early feeding, while an attempt was made to measure acceptance, understanding and use on the part of the mother and effects on the child. There was a high degree of acceptance, understanding and proper use of ORS. Admissions to hospital and death rates were low, 0.7% each. The mothers showed improved perception that continued feeding during diarrhoea was beneficial.
