Two measures employed in Egypt to promote livestock production and meat supply are the distribution of production credit and imports. The limitations of both measures are highlighted. The government seems to favour short term loans and large farmers, whereas investment needs are high and the sector is dominated by small farmers. On the import scene limited foreign exchange, high state involvement, and limited storage facilities among retailers are major constraints.
