Near the end of 1988 an Intermediate Court in Shanghai, China granted the request of a husband for a divorce on the ground of "complete alienation of mutual affection" under Article 25 of the Marriage Law. By mutual agreement, he and his wife had resorted to artificial insemination by anonymous donor to produce a child. But once the child was born, he was unable to bear the gossip and loss of face occasioned by public knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the birth and sought the divorce. At the same time that it granted the divorce, the court gave custody of the child to the wife and ordered the husband to pay support for both the wife and child.
