The Kerala State, India court held that a Muslim wife may not invoke provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code dealing with maintenance for divorced wives after the date at which the new Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act 1986 came into effect. It concluded that the new Act was not meant to supplement the previous rights to maintenance, but to specify what those rights were for divorced Muslim women. The same decision was reached in Md. Yunus v. Bibi Phenkani alias Tasrun Nisa (Crimes, No. 2, 1987, p. 241). The opposite decision was reached in Hazran v. Abdul Rehman (Criminal Law Journal, 1989, p. 1519).
