The manual is designed for readers who wish to design and construct low-cost sanitation systems on a self help basis, and for field workers who need practical, instructional material for their work. Each of the first four chapters deal with a particular group of individual household sanitation systems, namely: pit latrines, composting latrines; pour-flush latrines; aqua-privies. The final chapter deals with a communal sanitation problem namely septic tanks. These chapters are introductory and are not intended to cover complicated issues. Information is provided in simple terms, and figures are supplied wherever required. A comparison is made with regard to economic considerations and the various benefits, advantages, and disadvantages applying to the available sanitation options. Health aspects, however, are not covered.
