This Spanish Act does the following, among other things: 1) extends maternity leave from 14 to 16 weeks, with 6 weeks to be taken after childbirth; 2) authorizes parental leave for up to 3 years, with a guarantee that the job of the parent will be kept open for 1 year; 3) prohibits both physical and mental sexual harassment; and 4) grants adoption leave of 8 weeks for a child under 9 months old and 6 weeks for a child over 9 months old but under 5 years old. On July 10, 1989 the government of Catalan created the Catalan Institute for Women (Act No. 11/89, Boletin del Estado, No. 178, 27 July 1989).
