Carbon dioxide and ammonia in mouse cages: effect of cage covers, population, and activity

Gas samples were withdrawn from the cages through fixed tubes at intervals during one week. In the two standard cages used, a stainless steel hanging model and a transparent polycarbonate box, both with metal rod lids, carbon dioxide conc. remained low, but in the steel cage ammonia conc. became as high as in some covered cages, presumably because droppings were exposed in the tray and not mixed with dry bedding.
