A study on patient referrals from a Primary Health Centre in Haryana, was carried out over a two year period. Findings revealed that about 1.97 per cent of the patients attending the health centre were referred to secondary and tertiary care institutions. The average referrals per day were 1.59. More referrals were made for emergencies as compared to the routine OPD cases and more female patients were referred as compared to male patients. About 31.6 per cent of the total referral were for surgical consultations. Urinary tract and related conditions were the commonest complaints among the referrals. Studies of this nature help in the rational allocation of the scarce resources and also help the patients by minimising the distance to be travelled for seeking specialist care.
