Hypothalamus, temperature regulation, and feeding in the rat

Rats had electrodes implanted across the preoptic anterior hypothalamic region (POAH) of the brain. Radio-frequency heating of this area increased its temperature by 1.25 degrees C and resulted in a drop in core temperature and a rise in tail temperature. Heating POAH in other electrode-implanted rats for 24 h resulted in an increase in food intake in 6 of 8 rats tested. Heating the ventromedial and posterior hypothalamus resulted in no change in body temperature or food intake.
