A previous study indicated that trophoblastic vesicles formed in vitro by conceptuses recovered 14 days after ovulation prolonged luteal maintenance in mares after surgical transfer to the uterus on day 10 after ovulation. In the present study, however, transfer of trophoblastic vesicles from day-12 or day-14 horse conceptuses to recipient pony mares on day 10 or 12 after ovulation did not significantly prolong luteal maintenance compared with sham-operated control mares. Prolonged luteal maintenance was noted in 1 of 10 control mares and 1 of 15 treated mares. Trophoblastic vesicles from day-14 conceptuses significantly reduced in vitro production of PGF by endometrium from day-14 pregnant mares; intact day-14 conceptuses did not reduce PGF secretion. Trophoblastic vesicles secreted polypeptides that were similar in molecular weight range to those produced by intact conceptuses or conceptus fragments at day 12 or 14. It is suggested that trophoblastic vesicles may be useful in studying the maternal recognition of pregnancy.
