The population data on Pakistan must be viewed with caution in terms of its accuracy and interpretation, but it is useful in demonstrating certain trends, including that the population and its movements are outpacing efforts to control growth. The traditional values regarding high fertility, combined with greater health and longevity, are a volatile combination, leading to debilitating population growth. Population movements have also exacerbated the problems of growth as rural flight and urbanization complicate development efforts and increase urban pressure. There have been achievements in a number of areas in Pakistan such as education, literacy, and infrastructure development, but development gains have been negated by population growth that has been so rapid as to diminish the data on achievements. Gains in health care, sanitation, and education seem insignificant when set against birth rates that overwhelm projects and programmes.
