Resistance to cerebral circulatory hypoxia in rats with various types of behavior

The resistance to circulatory cerebral hypoxia was examined in rats with various types of behavior; behavior type was determined by the open field test and the forced swimming test. The rat's survival was found to be dependent on the degree of structural and metabolic reorganizations occurring shortly after cerebral ischemia. The fact that rats with active type behavior showed greater resistance to circulatory cerebral hypoxia was apparently associated with more pronounced compensatory processes in the brain, increased reactivity, greater resistance of brain mitochondria to oxygen deficiency, and more pronounced activation of succinate oxidase pathways of substrate oxidation in mitochondria. These results suggest that the difference in the activity level of the catecholaminergic system may be responsible for the varying degrees of increase in mitochondrial succinate oxidase activity in cerebral ischemia.
