Sixty four (from 74) HIV-1 seropositive babies born to 71 HIV-1 seropositive women and 130 control babies born to seronegative women were followed up for 12-22 months. At birth there was no significant difference between the 2 groups with respect to rate of stillbirths, gestational age, sex ratio and weight. Among the former group the probability of survival declined from 0.87 at 3 months to 0.61 at 12.5 months, whereas among the latter group it was 0.98 at 3 months and remained stable thereafter.Hilary Richardson.
