Respiratory distress in newborn infants: diagnostic approach

The relative incidence of the causes for a neonatal respiratory distress was studied in 9,193 subjects. Characteristics of the medical history, physical exam and laboratory results, allowing an accurate differential diagnosis, were identified. This study will allow the clinician to distinguish between the pulmonary, cardiac, infectious and neurological causes of neonatal respiratory distress, and thus determine the appropriate treatment.
