The convenience of Doppler ultrasound and photoplethysmography has been evaluated in two groups of subjects with varicose veins. A cross insufficiency was found by Doppler sonographic investigation in 63.3% of cases from the group of patients with clinically significant varicose veins and pathological varicosity, whereas in the group with clinically nonsignificant varicose veins in 10% of cases. The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). In the group of patients with clinically significant varicose veins and pathological varicosity, a pathological plethysmographic curve was observed in 27 (90%) out of a total of 30 subjects examined. At the same time, in the group of patients with clinically nonsignificant varicose veins, a shortening of plethysmographic curve was detected in 7, respectively, 23.3% of subjects. The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The convenience of Doppler ultrasound and photoplethysmography in the diagnostic work-up of clinically significant varicose veins and pathological varicosity as compared with clinical examination is discussed.
