Adenocarcinoma of the appendix is uncommon. Adenocarcinoma arising from an appendiceal stump after an appendectomy is even more rare, and only a few cases have been reported previously. In the Japanese literature, less than 150 cases of appendiceal adenocarcinoma are reported in total. Cases reported in Japan between 1981 and 1988 are reviewed, and the relative value of the various preoperative examinations is discussed.
