A retrospective study was performed to evaluate the subjective responses of surgically and nonsurgically treated temporomandibular joint (TMJ) patients to active nonsurgical therapies and the combination of active and passive nonsurgical therapies. The results showed that for patients who had TMJ surgery, there was a statistically significant improvement in symptomatology rating in those receiving a combination of active plus passive therapies, compared to active therapies alone. For the nonsurgical patients, there was no statistically significant difference in symptomatology rating scores between active only and the combination of active and passive treatment modalities.
