An outbreak of human plague occurred in the Boteti sub- district, Botswana, during 1989-90. The outbreak lasted about 5 months and the total number of cases identified was 170. Treatment was given following clinical diagnosis, confirmation being received later by blood cultures and ELISA tests. There were 12 deaths in all. The outbreak was successfully controlled by vigorous flea control and rodent control measures.
