The author examines the most recent annual statistics for live births (1993) in England and Wales with note made that more complete analyses will appear in the annual reference volume Birth Statistics 1993. Birth statistics are compiled annually from information collected at birth registration for entry into the live birth and stillbirth registers, and from additional information collected concurrently under the Population Statistics Acts of 1938 and 1960. The key birth statistics for 1993 show that the total number of live births fell for the third consecutive year and was 673,000 in 1993, 2% less than in 1992, the lowest annual total since 1986; the number of reproductive-age women changed only marginally, so that the crude birth rate, the general fertility rate, and total period fertility rate (TPFR) each decreased, with TPFR at 1.76 in 1993; the mean age of women at childbirth continued to rise, reaching 28.1 years; the proportion of births outside marriage increased by a further 1% between 1992 and 1993, to reach 32.2%; and there were 105.6 male births for every 100 female births, a higher ratio than in 1992.
