The effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids on the formation and development of mammary tumours, colon tumours and prostate and pancreatic tumours is reviewed. It is concluded that polyunsaturated omega -6 fatty acids might stimulate growth of tumours while polyunsaturated omega -3 fatty acids might have a tumour inhibiting effect. omega -3 fatty acids are found in oily fish and fish oil. The variability in composition of commercially available fish oil makes it unwise to recommend the use of fish oil capsules. It is recommended that a meal containing oily fish be consumed twice a week.
